PB-5000 R|Evolution - Black Ash - Outlet - 0010

I’ve been an SVS customer for years, running dual PB12-Plus subwoofers affectionately named “Beast” and “Beast-brethren.” They were the foundation of my home theater and delivered countless nights of jaw-dropping bass. Unfortunately, after a power outage, one of them finally gave up the ghost.

After a lot of soul-searching, I ordered not one, but two PB-5000 R Evolution subwoofers. Meet Zeus and Apollo.

I’ll be honest: my first impression wasn’t immediate shock and awe. When you’ve spent years with a system that’s been meticulously dialed in, replacing it can be unsettling. I expected the massive power ratings and cutting-edge technology to instantly blow my old setup away. Instead, what followed was a lesson in patience, calibration, and room acoustics.

The PB-5000 R Evolution isn’t about brute force alone. It’s about effortless authority. These subs dig deeper, stay cleaner, and seem to have unlimited headroom in my room. As I worked through placement, Audyssey calibration, house curves, and room treatment, something interesting happened. The bass didn’t just get louder. It got bigger.

Movie soundtracks now pressurize the room with a scale that feels almost cinematic. Explosions carry weight without sounding bloated. Deep effects emerge from nowhere and seem to hang in the air. The subs never sound strained, even at reference-level listening.

What impressed me most is how refined they are. Dual PB-5000s don’t feel like they’re showing off. They simply deliver whatever…

Received a pair PB5000 in perfect condition replacing 7 year old dual PB3000s for dedicated home theater. The 3000s hit, but these 5000s are on a whole different level. Hits hard, subsonic chair and body vibrations, pressurization of my closed 2500 cubic foot room is awesome. The subs make it all seem effortless. Build quality is always excellent with SVS as is customer service. Worth the upgrade and puts a smile on my face every time. Not sure I can say the same for the neighborhood.

I went back and forth between this or the PB4000 for several months and finally pulled the trigger during Black Friday. I ordered one to replace my PB12+ (farfield) and PC12+ (nearfield) configuration and see how it worked within my 3100cuft r room before thinking about a second one.

The first thing I noticed is the size difference between my PB12 Plus and it, side by side. On paper it doesn't look like much, however in person it's much larger.

I first swapped out my PB12+ with this in the same location and disconnected the PC12+, then re-ran the Audyssey MultEQ XT32 on my Denon 6200W. I turned up the volume 5db through the app. Something I did on my previous subs since the default was way too underwhelming.

Then proceeded to start with the movie 'Fury' and jump to one of several tank fight scenes as a starting point. It was at that point that I realized the magnitude of this Subwoofer.

I ran through the gamut of movies and scenes that I typically do when tuning a new set of speakers or subs and this thing shook the room and the house with ferocity. The tanks, Machine Gun fire, Dinosaurs, Lightsaber duels, Space ships and jets sounded like they were happening IN the room like I've never heard before. THIS is what I was after for the past few years.

That said, I will say that there seemed to be something missing in certain scenes that I had before and so I rolled out a PC and REW software with a Umik-1 Mic to find out. Sure enough I had several peaks and nulls often…
